PAN-OS management-interface RCE sees limited active exploitation

Palo Alto Networks has observed very limited exploitation of CVE-2026-0322, an authenticated remote-code-execution flaw in the PAN-OS management interface. The activity’s start date is unknown; disclosure was 14 October and the advisory was updated on 15 October 2026.

Confirmed facts

CVE-2026-0322 allows an authenticated attacker who can reach the PAN-OS management interface to execute arbitrary code with root privileges. Palo Alto Networks marks the exploit maturity as attacked and says very limited exploitation has targeted the management interface. The vendor has not stated when activity began or who is responsible. [1]

Who should assess exposure

The affected scope includes PA-Series and VM-Series firewalls and Panorama virtual and M-Series appliances on vulnerable PAN-OS branches. Cloud NGFW and Prisma Access are not affected. Exposure is greatest where management access is internet-reachable, but exploitation still requires valid high-privilege credentials and network access to the interface. [1]

Mission and governance impact

Root execution on a firewall or its central manager can compromise the integrity of security policy, routing and administrative trust. CISOs should treat a vulnerable, externally reachable management plane as both a technology risk and a privileged-access governance failure. Any suspicious session should trigger review of configuration changes and downstream trust relationships, not only software remediation.

Response priorities

Upgrade to the fixed release specified for each PAN-OS branch; no complete workaround exists. Immediately restrict management access to trusted internal addresses and preferably a dedicated jump box. Review privileged accounts and management-session telemetry, and hunt for the three source addresses listed by the vendor while avoiding reliance on indicators alone. Threat Prevention signatures 510046 and 510047 provide only limited coverage and require specific traffic routing, decryption and inspection conditions. [1] If exploitation is suspected, preserve evidence, contain administrative access and coordinate recovery through the incident-response process. [2]

Unknowns

Public evidence does not establish victim identities, the number of compromised devices, credential-acquisition method, attacker objectives or lateral movement. The vendor’s wording supports confirmed but limited exploitation; it does not support claims of a broad campaign. [1]
